YORK in North Yorkshire England has history going back 2000 years or more. The Romans founded Eboracum in 71 AD,the Viking came along and called it Jorvick. Today York as history galore, with many museums large and small , offering information. Here i mention some of them. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------YORK CASTLE MUSEUM in Tower Street, is on the site of York Castle which was built by William the Conqueror in 1068. The present building used to be a Debtors Prison ,the museum was founded by Dr. Kirk in 1938. The museum is famous for its reconstructed Victorian street ,Kirkgate and Edwardian street , Half Moon Court. There are rooms made up in periods of time.--The historic Condemned Cell remains, Dick Turpin (A. Palmer ) was imprisoned here in 1739.-- Outside by the River Foss is Raindale Mill a water mill, open only in in Spring and Summer .----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------THE YORKSHIRE MUSEUM is housed in the Museum Gardens off Museum Street by the River Ouse,in a neo-classical building with a fine portico. It was founded by the Yorkshire Philosophical Society in 1827. Today it has a large collection of archaeology,geology,and pottery. The head of a statue of Constantine the Great is here. Constantine was proclaimed emperor in York.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------NATIONAL RAILWAY MUSEUM ,the worlds finest rail museum ,is in Leeman Road, was opened in 1975 by the Duke of Edinburgh. It is situtated in two former large British Railways sheds with two Turntables.--Main attractions are The Mallard, the world steam speed record holder. The Famous Flying Scotsman and ,the Royal Train, Admission to the museum is FREE.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------JORVIK VIKING CENTRE is in the now Coppergate Shopping centre..When Cravens confectioners factory relocated and was demolished in 1981,excavations found Viking items. The York Archaeological Trust formed the Jovick Centre in 1984.---.Jorvik is the old norse name for York.--- The Experience is on Time Warp Machines round the site of Viking houses and lifelike mannrquins. --It can get busy go early.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------YORK ARMY MUSEUM is at 3 Tower Street facing Cliffords Tower, admission is £5. It has a collection of regimental items spanning 300 years. Tells the story of the British Army since 1685.----------Closed on Sundays.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------FAIRFAX HOUSE in Castlegate, close to Cliffords Tower, is Englands Finest Georgian Town House. Originally the winter house of Viscount Fairfax. It is richly decorated to a design by John Carr Architect.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------RICHARD111 EXPERIENCE is in the Monk Bar in Goodramgate. Monk Bar is a Gateway in the city wall. For a time King Richard 111 lived in Monk Bar. Entry is by the city wall up a narrow staircase.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------HENRY V11 EXPERIENCE is in Mickelgate Bar, access from city wall in Mickelgate.---King Henry V11 was the first Tudor King of England. He defeated King Richard 111 at Bosworth .------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------YORK CHOCOLATE STORY is in Kings Square. Over 3 floors tell the story why York was known as chocolate city. Rowntrees, and Terrys were the big factories in York. Products made in York included Dairy Box , Black Magic,KitKat, Polos, Smarties, Rowntrees Cocoa, Terrys All Gold,Chocolate Orange, etc. Tastings are available in the Chocolate Story..-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------THE BAR CONVENT HERITAGE CENTRE 17 Blossom Street, near Mickelgate Bar.. The museum documents early Christianity in the North of England.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------YORK MANSION HOUSE St. Helens Square. Open to Public,is the home of the Lord Mayor of York during his /her year of duty. About 200m from York Minster.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------YORKSHIRE AIR MUSEUM is in Elvington just outside York,at former RAF Elvington a world war 2 airfield. Arriving by car follow the brown tourist air museum signs, from York Outer Bypass.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------HOLGATE WINDMILL Windmill Rise Holgate. One and half mile from city centre. Bus number 1 to Fox Pub. or Acomb Road. Holgate Mill is Englands last surviving 5 sail windmill.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------BARLEY HALL Coffee Yard off Stonegate . a medieval town house, once the home of a Lord Mayor of York and Priors of Nostell Priory. Part dates back to 1360 AD.. Was restored in the 80 s and is open to the public.
